Silicon Nitride Coatings for Improved Implant Function

Kick Off Meeting in Leeds, UK
On 17 and 18 April 2013 the kickoff meeting for the EU project LifeLongJoints took place in Leeds, UK. In LifeLongJoints 14 partners from 5 European countries will develop new Coatings for Improved Implant Function which helps to improve the longevity and reliability of  joint replacements. LifeLongJoints will use silicon nitride coatings in which the combined high wear resistance of this material and solubility of any silicon nitride wear particles released, reduce the overall potential for adverse tissue reactions.

The project is led by the UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS, United Kingdom, with the support of TuTech Innovation, Germany. Among the other partners are universities and companies with special expertise. LifeLongJoints will run until 2018 and is funded by the European Union under the 7th Framework Programme up to a sum of 13.3 million Euro.
